Silencing Salem

The men in a small town in Salem, Massachusetts are haunted by the past-actions of their ancestors in the infamous Salem Witch Trials; it’s a past they never even knew much about, but it’s a past that is still very much a part of their present lives.

Is the play and movie “The Crucible” not a reference?
You don’t mention if this is set in present day or what. “past-actions” and “ancestors are redundant”; so are “”Salem” and “a small town in Massachusetts”.
This could be one sentence – perhaps:
The men in present day Salem, Massachusetts are haunted by the actions of their ancestors in the infamous Salem witch trials, a past they never knew a lot about but which is still very much a part of their lives.

Logline too long, make it short and sweet. Sound interested but, too much PAST. That defused my interest

We don’t talk about the Salem Witch Trials and showing how the wrongdoings of the men ancestors affect their lineage will create a haunting and informative movie. The men unawareness of what happened makes expectation of this movie more intense.

Interesting concept but a little too long for a logline.

Love it! It’s got me hooked. I love reading and watching about the Salem Witch Trials. They are almost the most interesting thing to learn knowledge about.

    Needs work how about:

In 2012 everything is prime for the Salem elite. That is until the old witch trials victims come looking for revenge.

Pepper, salt, butter…………. This is missing an item!! Logline has MASSIVE potential, but how are they haunted? And haunted by what, their dreams or ghosts? Just add the last spice and this will be yummy!! ;-D

The Salem Witch Trials are a powerful part of American history and are still very much alive in memory and as an analogy for various modern events. So, a contemporary take on it could be very interesting. I’d like to know more from the logline about how the townspeople are haunted. Is it ghosts? The possibility of ghosts? A modern witch getting revenge? Only a hint is needed in the logline.

Salem’s men are haunted by their ancestor’s indiscretions during the Witch Trials; their past unfortunately is alive as they ….

    Needs a hook

    My Two Cents

I feel as though there is a very interesting story in here. But the logline is flat and doesn’t really give a reason to want to pick up the script. Having said that, with a little work you can make this into an excellent logline – and the subject matter sounds cool.

How is the past still a part of their lives? Are they haunted by spirits of the tormented?

Although the men in modern salem, think that the horrific past of the witch trials is far behind them,…they soon discover that their lives, and the lives of those who lived there during the torture and burning of accused witches, are heinously intertwined.

First of all, the title should be “Silencing Salem” – not sure how to change that.

But Paul, thank you for the feedback. You’re right; I shouldn’t say “a small town in Salem”. I’ll work on it some more.

The men in a small town in Salem doesn’t really make sense because Salem is a town.

Is the story only about men?

A logline should tell your story in one sentence, and a story is about somebody dealing with a problem with obstacles preventing a simple victory.

In present day Salem, men are haunted by the town’s witch trial history as (something keeps happening to them)

Don’t get bogged down in unnecessary description like (past actions of their ancestors) or (past they nothing about).

Keep it short, simple and use words that provoke emotional responses.
